:: INTERVISTA A PAUL DI ANNO - Versione italiana Questa è la terza volta in tre anni che sei qui in Italia... forse perché la tua famiglia è di origine italiana, hai ancora parenti o amici qui? Oh si, la mia famiglia è originaria della Sicilia, di Napoli… mia madre è di Milano, dove vive anche mia zia, ho anche dei cugini a Napoli, Palermo… domani finalmente rivedrò a Napoli i miei cugini Marco e Franco! Cosa ti affascina di più di questo paese? Beh, è molto strano… la mia famiglia si è trasferita in Brasile negli anni '60. A San Paolo c'è tutta la mia vita, ho la mia casa, mia moglie è brasiliana, i miei ragazzi sono brasiliani, io sono… metà e metà, come si può dire. Quando torno a casa è fantastico, ma quando vengo qui in Italia per suonare… sai com'è… corazon! Significa davvero tanto per me essere qui in Italia, perciò in questo periodo sono totalmente concentrato per suonare qui; poi tra cinque mesi tornerò nuovamente, andrò a vivere a Pescara ed in Sicilia, ma prima devo tornare in Brasile per risposare mia moglie! Gli Axtra sono l'attuale band che segue le tue date italiane… Si, in questo periodo mi seguono in tour poiché i Killers sono impegnati con una nuova registrazione, sono molto impegnati. Suoneranno con me quest'anno al grande festival Sweden Rock, ma non credo abbiano intenzione di essere in giro ancora per molto con me, quindi… non ho bisogno di loro, ora ho questi ragazzi con me, gli Axtra, e credo comunque di suonare solo con bands italiane. Com'è nata questa collaborazione con gli Axtra? Il giorno in cui li ho incontrati eravamo a Milano, dove c'era una gara tra cover bands, ed hanno eseguito cover dei Kiss, dei Megadeth; io ero li in veste di giudice di gara; ad un certo punto, sono salito sul palco ed abbiamo cominciato a suonare insieme Anarchy in Uk. E' stato grandioso, ci siamo divertiti un sacco, siamo tutti amici anche giù dal palco. Lo stesso è accaduto a Londra al Ruskin Arms con i Children Of The Damned, dove ho anche incontrato Clive Burr. Come sono ituoi rapporti oggi con.. Con gli Iron Maiden? No, con Clive Burr… Oh, Clive è fantastico, è ancora uno dei miei migliori amici, ma non ho proprio voglia di parlare degli Iron Maiden… Sono in molti ancora oggi a pensare che tu sia il miglior cantante che i Maiden abbiano mai avuto, che effetto fa sentirti dire ciò? Beh, a dire il vero non ho mai pensato a questo… L'unica cosa che so è che faccio molto di più da quando ho lasciato gli Iron Maiden, mi diverto tantissimo quando suono i miei album solisti, ma ho bisogno di farmi strada nuovamente in Europa, questo è il motivo per cui canto ancora pezzi dei Maiden. Non suonerai più pezzi dei Maiden in futuro? Forse uno o due, è anche troppo! In America non ho più bisogno di farlo, mi sono esibito li per venti anni! Dopo aver lasciato i Maiden, hai detto di aver fatto molte cose, tra cui collaborazioni e pubblicato molti solo albums… Cosa ti ha soddisfatto di più di tutto? Il mio primo album solista, sai, è molto diverso… tutti mi dicevano di fare Heavy metal, ma io ho risposto "fottettevi", non lo farò. Quella con i Killers è stata sicuramente la migliore collaborazione che abbia mai fatto. Ho letto sul tuo sito che hai fatto un viaggio in India lo scorso Gennaio, e che hai anche avuto l'opportunità di prendere parte ad un film. Si, infatti, farò questo film molto presto, quando tutto questo sarà concluso, tornerò in India e ultimerò le riprese questo film. Puoi parlarmi di questa particolare esperienza? Beh, l'India è fantastica, la gente che vive lì è grandiosa, non posseggono molto denaro, così ci siamo esibiti per niente; in effetti, non suoniamo per soldi, suoniamo solo perché amiamo farlo, ci divertiamo. In Messico, in Brasile, la situazione è la stessa, gli shows sono fatti con pochi soldi, non mi piace il fatto che la gente paghi molto per assistere ai miei concerti. Quali sono i tuoi progetti per il futuro, sia live che in studio? Oh, ho molti progetti; prima di tutto dovremmo registrare un live, qualcosa tipo quello che abbiamo fatto questa sera; inoltre ho 8 nuovi pezzi pronti per un nuovo album solista, e due pezzi dei Killers… niente di che. Dopo il tour tornerò a casa per un po' e poi vedremo cosa accadrà! :: INTERVIEW TO PAUL DI ANNO - English version Well, this is the third time in the last three years you are in Italy… Maybe because your family is of Italian extraction. Do you still have any relative or friend here? Oh, yeah, my family is from Sicilia, Napoli… my mum is from Milano, where there is my aunt, I have also cousins in Napoli, Palermo… tomorrow is going to be fantastic, I'll go to Napoli and see my cousin Marco and Franco. What does fascinate you more of this country? Well, it's very strange… my family went to Brazil in the '60s. In San Paolo there's my all life, my home, my wife is Brazilian, my Kids are Brazilian, I am a… kind of a half, yeah, so, when I go home, is fantastic but, when I come back to play in Italy, you know… corazon! It means very much for me to be in Italy, so I'm totally concentrate to play here in this moment; also in the next five months I'll come back in Italia… I'll be living in Pescara and in Sicilia, but first I have to go to Brazil to marry my wife again! Axtra are the band who join your Italian shows… Yeah, they're playing with me because Killers are supposed to make a new record, they are very busy. They will play at Sweden Rock, the big festival, with me this year, but I don't think Killers are gonna be round much longer, so.. I don't need 'em, I have those guys, Axtra, I'll probably play only with Italian bands. How has this collaboration with Axtra and other bands begun? The day I met 'em we were in Milano, there was a fan competition, they played Kiss covers, Megadeth stuff, and I was there to judge the competition; I went on the stage and starting playing Anarchy in UK together. That was fucking fantastic, we had a great time, Children Of The Damned came to see ustoo, we are all friends, even out of stage. The same thing happened with in London during a convention at Ruskin Arms, where I met Clive Burr. How is your relationship today with… With Iron Maiden? No, with Clive Burr… Oh, with Clive is fantastic, he's still one of my best friends, but I don't want to talk about Iron Maiden! As many people think today, you are the best singer Iron Maiden ever had: how does this make you feel? Well, I never think about it… The only thing I know is that I do much more since I left Iron Maiden, I'm very happy to play my solo albums. I have to introduce myself back in Europe, that's the reason why I'm playing Maiden stuff. You won't play Maiden songs in the future? Maybe one, or two, that's quite enough! In America I don't need to do this, I performed there for 20 years! After Maiden your life has been full of projects, collaborations and you published several albums; what satisfied you more? I first did my solo albums, they were very different; everyone said to me to make heavy metal records, and I answered fuck you, I won't do that. That with Killers I think is the best collaboration I did. I red you made a trip to India last January, where you had the chance to take part to a movie which deal with Indian culture. Yeah, I'm making a movie very soon, when all this will be finished, I'll go back to India and make this movie. Could you talk me about this particular experience? Well, India is fantastic, people are great, they don't have so much money, so we played for nothing; in fact, is not about money, we play just because we love to play, we have fun. In Mexico, in Brazil, there's the same situation, shows are very cheap, I don't like people have to pay a lot of money to come to my shows. What are your Live and studio projects for the future? Oh, a lot of things, first of all we have to record a live album, maybe something like the show we played tonight; then I have 8 new songs ready for another solo album, and two Killers songs… not good stuff. After touring, I'll come back home for a while and then we'll see what is going to happen.
